Information:

Be sure to include a 100-word blurb introducing your show. This blurb will accompany your show's name in the Common Casting booklet, which is distributed to all actors and techies. Your blurb is crucial, because most people decide whether or not to audition for your show based on their interest in the blurb.

You can mention various items in the blurb, but most shows include: a summary of the plot, some description of roles (i.e. 25 male/ 25 female, all are singing parts, etc), some idea of your artistic vision for the show, and occasionally the type of experience that you want the production to be for actors and techies. The board recommends using the first 70 or so words as a description of the show (something professional that you would use for publicity as well) and then using the rest of the space to briefly list some specific character requirements. Also, if your show is a musical, please include the genre and length of song selections that you would prefer from auditionees.

Whatever the content, the blurb should be exciting, interesting, professional, and accessible. As you write your blurb, imagine that you are a freshman walking into Common Casting for the first time: what could a blurb say to get you to audition or join the tech staff? Please don't just dash something off; you'll regret it when Common Casting starts. Invest some time in the writing process to present your show as well as possible. We reserve the right to edit your blurb for length if it exceeds 100 words. We also reserve the right to send the blurb back to you for revisions, or to revise it ourselves, to make sure that it sounds accessible.

*Please note that we highly suggest you write two blurbs right now- one for Common Casting (that includes descriptions of parts and the audition/rehearsal process) and one for publicity use/ the HRDC website (probably a quick and interesting idea of the plot and setting and some reason for why people should come see your show).*

If you have any questions, or need help brainstorming ideas or editing your blurb, please e-mail the Campus Liason at campus(.AT.)hrdctheater.com. We will be glad to help.
