Common Casting FAQ

Q: What is Common Casting, who can audition, and who can hold auditions?
A: Common Casting is a week of auditions held at a central location at the beginning of every semester, where you can audition separately for nearly EVERY show that's happening around the Harvard campus (including all Loeb productions) for that semester. Anyone, whether affiliated with Harvard or not, a veteran of 100 plays or trying out for the first time ever, is welcome to audition. All directors who wish to hold auditions through Common Casting must register their show by the deadline listed on the Common Casting Registration Page. Common Casting is also a great opportunity for people interested in technical theater and production to learn about opportunities in the theater community! The HRDC board will be on hand throughout Common Casting to answer any questions you may have!

Q: Can I audition for every show?
A: Yes, you can! If you have the inclination, you will definitely be able to audition for all the shows going through common casting. Auditions are simple, fun, and a great way to meet tons of people in the community. So: audition, audition, audition.

Q: Do I audition for each show individually?
A: Yes, each production auditions separately. This gives actors the freedom to pick and choose the shows they audition for. With a bunch of small separate auditions instead of one large audition, you have many chances to give your best performance instead of one!

Q: How can I know when certain shows are auditioning?
A: There will be a schedule available at the Freshman Information Session, Pizza Q, and every night of Common Casting. When completed, the schedule will also be available online and linked to on the main page.

Q: What if I have never done theater before?
A: Common Casting auditions are strictly no experience necessary! Everyone is welcome to audition, and many first time theater folk have found themselves in casts next to people who've been doing shows professionally for
years!

Q: What if I am interested in working on other aspects of a production in addition/instead of acting?
A: There will be a tech table at Common Casting where the HRDC tech liaison will answer all of your questions and help you sign up to help on shows from all over campus. Come by, say aloha, and check out some of the theaters on campus! THE TECH PAGE also has a lot more info on opportunities available and ways to get involved! Also, the week after common casting is "Tech Week," a week full of technical theater workshops for both novices and tech veterans.

Q: Are there nitty-gritty rules for actors going through common casting?
A: Yes! These rules can be found on page 2 and 3 of the common casting booklet (available at common casting, the pizza-q, and the freshman info session) and will also be available online soon!

Q: Do I need to bring anything to auditions?
A: Bring yourself, a smile and a copy of a Common Casting Audition Form for every audition you are planning to do. Audition forms can be found at Common Casting or online here . Additionally, if you are planning on auditioning for musicals, you are welcome to bring in sheet music for songs. If you don't have a song prepared, DON'T WORRY! You're still welcome to audition and sing whatever you like (happy birthday is the perennial suggestion).

Q: Who can I contact with more questions?
A: Any questions can be directed to the campus liaison (campus(.AT.)harvard.edu). Please send along your questions!

Q: How do I register my show for common casting?
A: To register your show for common casting, go the the common casting registration page:. Be sure to do this before the deadline, or else your show can't be guaranteed audition space or a mention in the Common Casting booklet.
